We live in reality, yet we are not content with it. Since its advent, film has been offering its audience a filmic reality with fictionality and fantasy. Cinematic images, in turn, take part in the construction of individual dream, desire and sexuality. Cinema, then, blurs reality and fantasy, fiction and non-fiction. Subsequently, by reflecting and distorting our desires, it reorients our understanding of interpersonal and sexual relationships. Here, the emphasis on imagery raises questions about non-visual factors that also affect our perception of reality and sexual experience. With novel representational techniques entering the media realm trying to grasp the underrepresented, the manner in which fiction and non-fiction will evolve and continue to impact our notion of reality remains unknown.

Ahead of its time, the 2002 film Let’s Love Hong Kong offers an insight into the dynamic between imagery and reality, as well as the dilemma of modernized human interaction. Writer, director Yau Ching will join us as guest speaker to talk about her critical engagement with the issue from a perspective of gender and sexuality within the East Asian context.

我们生活在现实,但从未满足于现实。电影从诞生之初就开始向人们呈现充满虚构与幻想的世界,而影像中的叙事和表演也无时不参与着个体梦境与欲望的构建。由此,现实和影像渐趋同化,虚构与非虚构也越来越无法区分。人和人之间的关系因影像的介入发生改变,我们对“性”的理解和诠释很可能为影像主导。于此同时,在图像和现实的相互作用的语境下,我们似乎不可避免地放大了“视觉”,也边缘化了在生活和性体验中同样重要的其他身体感官。我们能否期待新技术的出现填补现实感官空缺?又将怎样迎接现实在虚构和虚拟共同作用下的新一轮发展?

Synopsis |剧情梗概

Fantasies, dreams, tears and fears of four women chasing and watching each other in post-colonial Hong Kong. They chase, seduce, resist and fantasize about each other. A Hong Kong that is as fake as real provides the perfect setting for their games, secrets, screams and tears. “Made-in-China Chan” (in Cantonese: Chan Kwok Chan) works as a stripper in cyberspace but she often has headaches. Her only solace is from a Mainlander migrant who echoes what Chan does but with a better attitude. Nicole has money and power but she depends on “Made-in-China” to play with virtually at night in order to get some sleep. Zero does not have anything but she knows what she wants and is determined to get it. Four women meet in Hong Kong somewhere in the future. How do their desires manifest themselves in this Forbidden City? From totally different backgrounds, they look like they have very different problems but do they?

Director Bio|导演介绍

游静 Yau Ching

一九八零年代开始在香港报章杂志上写专栏,并发表诗、文化艺术评论等。九十年代在纽约学习纪录片理论及制作、录像艺术创作等,在伦敦研读世界电影史及电影理论,并参与制作性小众电视节目。曾于加州大学圣地牙哥校址、美国密西根大学、台湾国立政治大学、香港岭南大学等任教 。二零一七年起为香港大学名誉教授及汕头大学文学院客座教授,二零一八年起为香港中文大学中国研究中心客席教授。专书多种,电影及录像作品曾入围台湾金马奖、日本山形国际纪录片展等。 《好郁》荣获葡萄牙费加拿霍斯电影节影评人大奖、《流》荣获日本视象论坛节评审团特别奖等。

Born in Hong Kong, Yau Ching is known in the Chinese-speaking world as a writer and in the English-speaking world a filmmaker and video artist. Her film/video works have been invited to venues including Alexanderplatz Station of the Berlin Underground, Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Galarie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and broadcast in North America, Europe and Japan. As a writer, she was invited to Singapore Writers’ Festival in 2019, and Iowa International Writers’ Workshop in 2020. She is Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong and currently teaches at Center for China Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
